Discovering the Medieval Villages of Valleriana

The so-called Castella date back to the Lombard era, the story of a thousand years of history, the charm of hand-worked pietra serena, typical of this portion of Tuscany, will be the focus of this unique experience of its kind. It will be possible to visit the Nardini quarry, the last open quarry in the province of Pistoia
The itinerary connects the Castella di San Quirico di Valleriana and Castelvecchio, once rivals because in the territory of Lucca the first and Florence the second, today they live in a relaxing quiet full of green woods and sparkling waterways. Departure from the village of San Quirico, after the necessary visit to its inhabited area, we leave the castle and face a beautiful mule track that leads us between crops and olive groves at the gates of Castelvecchio, here we visit the seventeenth-century oratory of SS. Crocifisso and the Romanesque parish church of Santi Tommaso e Ansano, masterpieces of the genius of the stonecutters and artisans of the valley. After crossing the village of “La Dogana” we return to the starting point.
